One of the prompts in my reading challenge was to choose a book written by an author who shares the same first or last name as you. That one made me smile right away, because it led me straight to Identity Unknown by Patricia Cornwell.
Since my name is Pat (Patricia), it felt like the perfect match. What I didn’t realize at the time, however, was that this book is part of the long-running Kay Scarpetta series. Apparently, I jumped right into the middle of a much bigger story! Now I have a feeling I’ll be working my way back through the earlier books to see how everything began.
Identity Unknown follows Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant forensic pathologist who is called in to investigate a suspicious death tied to a mysterious identity and a complicated web of clues. As Scarpetta and her investigative team dig deeper, the case reveals unsettling secrets and raises questions about who can truly be trusted.
The story blends forensic science, suspense, and fast-moving investigation—keeping readers guessing as the pieces slowly come together. It’s the kind of mystery that pulls you along as you try to solve the puzzle right alongside the characters.
Interestingly, the Kay Scarpetta stories have also made their way to television, with a series adaptation currently in development for Netflix. That alone makes me even more curious to explore the earlier books and get to know these characters from the very beginning.
Sometimes reading challenges take you in directions you didn’t expect. In this case, one shared name may have just introduced me to an entire series.
And honestly, I think that’s part of the fun of reading.
