Meet the Pack is a recurring series where I introduce the dogs who share our home, our land, and our hearts. Each one has a story—some joyful, some heartbreaking, all meaningful.

As I come to the final post in this series, I find myself slowing down. Some stories are easy to tell, and others ask you to sit with them first.

Before I introduce Willow, I need to honor Ruby.

Ruby, our Rottweiler, came into our lives after the passing of my husband’s aunt and quickly became part of our family. Her time with us was far too short. An aggressive cancer moved faster than any of us were prepared for, and we had to say goodbye much sooner than we ever imagined. Still, Ruby lived a full life—one filled with comfort, companionship, and love.

Ruby shared a special bond with Willow. Their friendship was quiet and natural, the kind that doesn’t need explaining. Losing Ruby changed the rhythm of our home, and in that space, Willow’s story shines even brighter.

Every dog has a story. This is Willow’s.

Willow is my heart dog—the one who changed me in ways I didn’t expect. She came to us through rescue, carrying a past we don’t fully know, but from the moment she arrived, she claimed her place with quiet determination and unwavering loyalty.

Willow is a pitbull, a breed so often misunderstood, yet she is one of the gentlest souls I’ve ever known. She wants to be close, to belong, to know where her people are at all times. Whether she’s curled up nearby, following me from room to room, or simply watching the day unfold, Willow’s comfort comes from connection.

She feels deeply—joy, loss, love—and gives all of it freely. After Ruby’s passing, Willow carried that loss in her own way, reminding me just how strong the bond between animals can be. Through it all, she has remained steady, loving, and present.

Willow reminds me that labels don’t define hearts. That rescue dogs don’t need saving as much as they need understanding. And that love—when given the chance—can be healing in ways we never expect.

She isn’t just part of our pack. She is part of my story.
