Meet the Pack is a recurring series where I introduce the dogs who share our home, our land, and our hearts. Each one has a storyâsome joyful, some heartbreaking, all meaningful. Through these posts, I share who they are, how they found us, and the unique roles they play in our family.
Every dog has a story. This is Atticusâs.
Atticus is our livestock guardian dog, and unlike some who find their way to us later in life, Atticus has been with us since he was just a puppy. From the very beginning, he grew up alongside my sheep, learning their rhythms, their sounds, and their needs. They arenât just animals he watches overâthey are his flock.
Living outdoors year-round, Atticus takes his role seriously. He protects the sheep through every season, standing guard in the heat of summer, the cold of winter, and everything in between. His presence is steady and reassuring, a quiet reminder that someone is always watching out for them.
Atticus is especially in his element during lambing seasonâmy favorite time of year and his as well. He seems to understand just how important those tiny new lives are. During those weeks, heâs extra alert, calm but focused, staying close and making sure every ewe and lamb is safe. Thereâs a gentleness to him then, paired with a deep sense of responsibility that never wavers.
Though Atticus lives outside, he is very much part of our family. He knows us, trusts us, and works beside us with a loyalty thatâs been built over years of shared mornings, late nights, and long seasons together. Watching him move among the sheep, you can tell this is exactly where he belongs.
Atticus reminds me that some bonds are formed early and last a lifetime. When a dog grows up knowing his purpose, his flock, and his place in the world, it showsâin every watchful glance and every quiet moment of protection.
Meet the Pack is an ongoing series celebrating the dogs who are part of our familyâeach one loved, each one with a story to tell.
