For the first prompt in my reading challenge—a book made into a movie—I chose The Unbreakable Boy by Scott Michael LeRette.
This book completely stole my heart. It tells the story of Austin, a boy with autism and brittle bone disease, whose joyful outlook on life leaves a lasting impact on everyone around him. Through his family’s journey, we see both the challenges and the incredible beauty that come with raising a child who experiences the world differently.
As a retired special education teacher, this one really hit home for me. Over the years, I had the privilege of working with so many students like Austin—kids who reminded me daily that strength doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Their resilience, honesty, and unique perspectives are something I will always carry with me.
I haven’t watched the movie yet, but I’m hoping to do that next weekend. It will be interesting to see how the story translates from page to screen—especially with such a heartfelt and meaningful message at its core.
If the movie captures even a portion of what the book offers, I think it will be something truly special.
